Eloping in Rocky Mountain National Park is an amazing way to celebrate your love surrounded by jaw-dropping views and nature's beauty. If you're thinking about saying "I DO" there, here's a simple guide to help you plan a stress-free and memorable elopement:
1) The most boring, but important part: Paperwork
Even though you're keeping things low-key, you'll still need a wedding permit to hold your ceremony in the park.
It is required by the National Park Service for all weddings, no matter the size.
You can apply online, even a year in advance which we HIGHLY recommend. You can learn more directly from the National Park Service website. They have all the info you need to apply for the permit, there's even a table for every location and what size wedding party is allowed, plus parking spots available!
2) Which spot is the best spot?
Popular & Scenic Spots:
a) Bear Lake
b) Sprague Lake
c) Emerald Lake
d) Dream Lake
Secluded and Remote Locations:
a) Lily Lake
b) Wild Basin Area
c) Alpine Ridge (Trail Ridge Road)
3) Find an Officiant, if you want one
If you want one... but it's not required. Colorado is a self solemnizing state, which means you don't need an officiant. You can totally get married, just the two of you and maybe a photographer to capture your moment! Which takes me to the next point :)
4) Hire a Photographer
If you want to remember the day with stunning photos, hire a photographer who specializes in elopements. They'll know the best spots in the park, the best time of day for lighting and can help with timing and logistics!
5) What to wear
Comfortable shoes, especially if you're hiking to your spot. You can always pack your dress shoes and change in them before the ceremony! Also, a great way to capture "getting ready" shots.
Dress for the weather: It's no doubt that mountain weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers in case it gets chilly. Pack a raincoat and an umbrella!
6) Celebrate After!
After your ceremony, take a moment and relax and enjoy the spot you've chosen. Consider bringing a small picnic or champagne to celebrate. The beauty of eloping is that you get to enjoy each other's company without the stress of a big party.
Relaxing Activites: After vows, you could go for a scenic hike, sit by a lake or just enjoy the views. Whatever makes you feel present and happy.
Dinner or Drinks: Once you've finished with the ceremony, you can head into Estes Park for a cozy dinner, or grab a drink at one of the local breweries.
7) Stay Low-Key and Respectful
RMNP is a national treasure, so be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles: clean up after yourselves, stick to the designated trails and respect wildlife.
